You could be driving an emission free solar or wind charged Electric Vehicle right now...
One that can do 80 mph, has a typical range of 120 miles (on the energy equivalent of 2/3 gallons of gas), has 3 times the torque (for take off) than gas, requires NO Gas,and NO Oil. ( No exhaust bills either)
And you could be driving for free after amortizing the initial equipment costs (but this has been thwarted by GM/Texaco/Chevron).
There are those that are promoting drilling in Alaska, off the coast near the fishing banks, in the Gulf but none of this is necessary anymore. A total electrical solution has already been found (years ago) but knowledge of it is being subverted.
Below is a playlist of must know information; watch at least to the end of the 2 battery stories (but you really should see further to understand how it is that the Prius is a contrivance to keep you going to the pump - a forward designed hybrid would use electric almost all of the time and would only use (bio)diesel when it went beyond it's batteries range ) .
You have to play each video individually; requires Flash Plug-in :

Stanford Ovshinsky (Probably the world's greatest Guru on energy): After watching the above see an informative piece about the inventor: (Any serious student or professor of alternative energy should see this; ATTN government officials: Stan gives a good general outline on what needs to be done)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DYxoacwuxg
As inventor of the Nickel Metal Hydride battery and thin film photovoltaics, Stanford Ovshinsky has provided a complete solution to moving away from fossil fuel.
This man is among the most important inventors of the 20th Century; he stands with Gilbert Hyatt (inventor of the micro-processor) and the Jobs/Wozniak team of Apple Computer (who changed the world with the personal computer and desktop printing and video).
The world, as we know it today, would not exist with out Stan's inventions. In 1988 the PBS science program Nova aired a documentary on Ovshinsky titled "Japan's American Genius".
Stan Ovshinsky's Nickel Metal Hydride battery patent was, regretfully, sold to GM; Stan thought that it would actually be deployed. Texaco bought it from GM, Chevron absorbed Texaco and now batteries large enough to power full EV's were pulled back in litigation and contracts.
The modern hybrids including Prius still use smaller Nickel Metal Hydride batteries but they are handicapped because of reduced size. The Priuses can go about 3 miles; the RAV4-EV could go 120 avg (up to 155). This limitation insures that an I.C.E.(Internal Combustion Engine) has to keep charging them. They CANNOT BE PLUGGED INTO SOLAR OR WIND as a true EV can; their battery pack is too small to take a charge substantial enough to have a very large range of travel and so they are kept (unnecessarily) addicted to oil.
There needs to be a public energy revolt to reverse this. It is a matter of national security and anti-trust.
What can you do?
First spread the word, help inform the unknowing public about this. (virally distribute this or something similar to all of your associates)
Second refuse to buy a new fossil fuel powered car and tell car dealers and manufacturers that you refuse to buy another car unless it can plug in. (If you get junk mail or SPAM from car dealers do a return to sender and write on the page "not buying a new car unless it is an EV".)
Contact your representatives and inform them of your dismay on the anti-trust, national security and global warming ramifications caused by the limitations imposed on the Nickel Metal Hydride battery. --
The availability of extended range Plug-In Hybrids would be a great imprvement, but dedicated Plug-in EV's are better for the environmrnt because you don't have to manufacture the engine and related items for each vehicle: radiators, exhaust, oil, fuel, anti-freeze, etc. A better range extension capabilty would be trailor mouned charging system or a quick battery swap capabilty. The average American drives less than 29 miles a day and would only need this capabilty occasionally. They could do rental at their nearest U-Haul or Ryder, etc. for the occasional need. With gas approaching nearly $5 a gallon, the least-cost place to get produce is one's own backyard garden.
To help residents of greater New Bedford convert their lawns into food-producing gardens, Sustainable SouthCoast (SSC) and the Wings Court Eco-Garden Project gave away compost, seedlings, and raised-bed garden frames at the June 6 First Fridays monthly cultural evening.
“Garden Night” drew residents from throughout the region to pick up what they needed to start a small backyard garden as well as help transform Wings Court. The Wings Court Eco-Garden Project will demonstrate plants that remediate lead and other toxins, show ways to manage stormwater ecologically, and establish edible landscaping and no-mow lawn alternatives.
The Wings Court Eco-Garden Project and the Downtown Bike Rack Projects are initiatives of the tentatively named New Bedford Green/Verde (NewB Green), a group of local activists interested in greening New Bedford and making it a more healthful, environmentally harmonious, and enjoyable place to live, with lower living costs. NewB Green is seeking volunteers to join in planning projects and events. Email

Gardeners were accompanied by music during First Friday's monthly 5 pm Community Sing Out and “New Works” featuring Joel Monty (http://www.myspace.com/joelmonty) and special guest Marcy Gregoire (http://marcymusic.org/).
The next First Friday event theme is (Fossil Fuel) Independence Day, July 4, in Wings Court. Together with SSC, the group is planning energy art, presentations on reducing energy bills, and a pledge to adopt clean renewable energy in New Bedford. Volunteers gathered (2008.06.04) at Victory Park on Freedom Blvd, NB to sample soil for a pilot location of New Bedford's Community Garden project.
Volunteers included Scott Alphonse, City of New Bedford director of environmental stewardship and Cynthia Gilcrest of Common Sense Environmental who directed (pro-bono) the taking of soil samples for laboratory analysis to be sure the garden soil does not contain any harmful substances. Cynthia also provided volunteers with the hands on experience of sampling soils, and also background on the type of work that she does as an environmental scientist. The samples are off to the lab for results.
Once cleared the area will be available to the community for planting their own shared “Victory Garden”. The results should be in shortly and the area may be open in time for planting this year if there is enough interested volunteers/participants.
Interested parties should contact Conservation Commissioner Sarah Porter (

Though not yet a well-oiled machine it is just the beginning of a community based information system in the open source tradition. opennewbedford.org has some wonderfully talented people that have only just got things started. What do you have to offer ... We are open to idea' s and content, and we are looking for writers, artist designers etc. Come on down... Well.. Email us ... We will be doing this in the virtual world. |
